Is the Water Shortage
in Eastsound Due to the GMA?
NO!
Eastsound Water Users Association was already running out of
memberships even before the GMA
activities began.
They did not even apply for more
water rights until 2005, but that time they already had hundreds of people on their waiting
list,
and many more that just gave up.
There may not even be a shortage of water in the aquifer.
When the state Dept. of Ecology reviewed a portion of the data EWUA was basing
their claim of a water shortage on,
it was pointed out that mountain
front recharge was not taken into account.
The
very expensive recharge model EWUA paid for did not take into account several
significant sources of recharge, and exaggerated the volume of water consumed by
exempt wells. The EWUA model for the Eastsound aquifer can not be valid since
there are at least 5 documented artesian wells in the area. The simplistic model
EWUA uses
can not explain this. There are several problems with the models EWUA
is promoting.
